In October 2023, the Women Development Fund (WODEF), in collaboration with AMSHA Africa, successfully implemented a five-day training program on menstrual hygiene management and the production of organic sanitary pads. The initiative aimed at addressing period poverty while empowering young women and girls with practical knowledge and sustainable solutions.
Inclusive Participation and Reach
The training engaged 51 participants representing different grassroots women’s organizations from Kisii and Nyamira Counties. This diverse representation strengthened peer learning and ensured that knowledge and skills gained would be cascaded to wider communities.
Promoting Dignity and Health
The training created a safe and supportive space for participants to learn about menstrual health, hygiene practices, and the importance of breaking stigma around menstruation. Through open discussions, WODEF and AMSHA Africa promoted dignity, confidence, and self-awareness among young women and girls.
Skills for Sustainable Solutions
A key highlight of the training was the hands-on production of organic sanitary pads. Participants were equipped with practical skills to produce affordable, eco-friendly menstrual products locally, providing a sustainable alternative to costly commercial options.
Beyond meeting personal needs, these skills also open opportunities for income generation and small-scale entrepreneurship.
Ending Period Poverty Through Partnerships
This collaboration underscores the power of partnerships in addressing social challenges. By combining efforts, WODEF and AMSHA Africa are contributing to increased access to menstrual products, improved health outcomes, and reduced stigma in communities.
Looking Ahead
WODEF remains committed to working with partners to scale up menstrual health interventions and support grassroots women’s organizations to drive lasting change.
Through collaboration, knowledge, and innovation, ending period poverty becomes an achievable goal.
