On 22nd August 2023, a transformative step toward enhancing rural livelihoods was taken through the Agribiz for Rural Economic Sustainability Training (AGREST) Program held in Nyankoba, Birongo Ward, within Nyaribari Chache Sub-county. The training brought together local farmers, youth, and women with a shared goal: to build sustainable, income-generating agricultural practices that can uplift rural communities.
The AGREST Program is designed to empower rural populations by equipping them with practical agribusiness skills, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and encouraging entrepreneurship in farming. In a region where agriculture is a primary source of livelihood, such initiatives are essential in addressing economic challenges and improving household resilience.
During the training, participants engaged in hands-on sessions covering key areas such as sustainable land preparation, crop management, value addition, and market access. Emphasis was placed on transitioning from subsistence farming to agribusiness-oriented practices—helping farmers view agriculture not only as a means of survival but as a viable and profitable enterprise.
One of the key highlights of the training was the strong participation of youth and women. Their involvement reflects a growing recognition of their role in driving rural economic development. By equipping them with knowledge and skills, the program is fostering a new generation of agripreneurs who can innovate, adapt, and lead within their communities.
The training also underscored the importance of climate-smart agricultural practices. With changing weather patterns increasingly affecting productivity, participants were introduced to techniques such as soil conservation, crop diversification, and efficient water use. These approaches are critical in ensuring long-term sustainability and food security.
Beyond technical skills, the AGREST Program created a platform for knowledge exchange and community collaboration. Farmers shared experiences, challenges, and solutions, strengthening networks that will continue to support them beyond the training.
The impact of such initiatives extends far beyond a single day. By building capacity at the grassroots level, the AGREST Program contributes to improved incomes, enhanced food security, and overall rural economic sustainability. It is a reminder that empowering communities with the right tools and knowledge can unlock immense potential.
As rural communities in Kisii County continue to navigate economic and environmental challenges, programs like AGREST play a vital role in shaping a more resilient and prosperous future.
