International Day of Peace 21st September 2023: Theme: Actions For Peace: Our Ambitions For the #GlobalGoals

Dear Friends and Advocates of Gender Equality,

As we gather to celebrate the 2023 Global Peace Day under the theme, “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals,” we stand firmly behind our feminist position, placing a spotlight on the pivotal role that women play in promoting peace, especially in Kenya.

In the heart of Africa, where diversity and cultural richness abound, Kenya has experienced its share of challenges in maintaining peace and stability. Yet, amid the turmoil, one constant beacon of hope remains: the unwavering determination of women to be agents of peace, equality, and progress.

Women are not just bystanders in the pursuit of peace; they are active architects of change. Their voices, resilience, and determination have ignited sparks of transformation across communities and societies. When women are actively involved in governance and leadership, they influence critical policy reforms that address the scourge of sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) and conflict in our most vulnerable areas.

In our pursuit of the #GlobalGoals, we must recognize that gender equality is not just a goal in itself; it is a prerequisite for achieving all other sustainable development objectives. Women’s participation in peace-building is not just a matter of fairness; it is a strategic imperative. When women are empowered and engaged, we unlock a wealth of innovative solutions, nurturing societies where justice, equality, and peace prevail.

As we celebrate Global Peace Day in 2023, let us remember that sustainable peace is not just the absence of violence; it is the presence of justice, equality, and respect for all. Let us commit ourselves to support and elevate the voices of women who have, for generations, borne the weight of conflict and violence, and who are now forging the path towards a more peaceful and equitable world.

Together, we can create a future where women are not just participants but leaders in shaping policies, nurturing communities, and fostering peace. Let our ambition for the #GlobalGoals be a shared vision where women’s empowerment is at the forefront, transforming Kenya and the world into beacons of peace, hope, and progress.

Join us in this noble cause. Together, we can build a more peaceful world for all.

In solidarity,

Women Development Fund (WODEF)
